Meet Librarian x

Kia ora, my name is Maia and I joined QLDC Libraries 5 years ago as a Library Assistant working at Hāwea Library. Now I work one day a week as a Librarian at Wānaka Library, and the rest of the week I'm the Librarian at Mount Aspiring College.

I am so lucky to be part of a great team of Public Librarians and to be an integral part of our education system as a School Librarian.

Recently I had the privilege of being a judge for the New Zealand Book Awards For Children And Young Adults 2023. It was a wonderful opportunity to spend time immersed in the world of our literature for our young people and it was wonderful to see the depth and breadth of talent in our writers, illustrators and translators.

Before joining the QLDC Libraries team I'd mostly been stay-at-home-mumming to my four children. My family moved from Wellington to Methven to Wānaka, arriving here in 2015. I have always loved libraries. When I was growing up library visits were a weekly occurrence and I borrowed as many books as I could carry. All my children are readers so I feel I have done OK.

Books have always been opportunities to me, opportunities to lose yourself and find yourself, immerse yourself in other worlds and gain insight into other people's lives. I like reading literary fiction, literature in translation, graphic novels, fantasy and science fiction, picture books, etc, etc, etc. I have eclectic tastes in books.

My recommended reads include the NZCYA Margaret Mahy Book of the Year 2023, some gritty realistic fiction, some weird alt reality fantasy, classic sci-fi and a graphic novel series that I've loved for years and years and years.
