All library branches will be closed on Friday 10 July 2026 for the Matariki public holiday.

New library book drop location

Paetara staff demonstrating new library book drop location at Paetara in Wanaka
We know that it can be difficult to make time to return your library books in your daily routine. So we've partnered with QLDC's Sports and Recreation team to bring you a new book drop location in Wānaka!
You can new return library books into the book drop located outside Paetara Aspiring Central (the old Mitre10 building). The Paetara team will mark the books as returned at the end of the day, so they no longer appear on your library account.
We also have book drops at Queenstown Events Centre and Wānaka Recreation Centre.
Librarian's tip: Please don't return heavy hard copy books, boardgames, or any items from our Karawhiua Collection (Library of Things) into a book drop. Please hand these into a library branch directly so they don't get damaged.
Adjust your loan period on Libby
Our standard library memberships allow you to borrow books and eBooks for 3 weeks (21 days). However, we often hear from Libby users who are frustrated because the Libby app makes it appear like you can only borrow for 14 days. You've got the power to change this: Libby allows you to amend and save your preferred lending period before you borrow the book!
Here's how to do it:
  • Find a title in Libby you want to borrow.
  • Before you click on Borrow, click on the number of days next to 'Borrowing for...'.
  • Now you should see a small menu. You can choose from a 21 day, 14 day, or 7 day lending period.
  • Once you choose a lending period for the first time, this will be saved as your default setting.
Librarian's tip: Please remember to return your Libby items when you are done (by clicking on 'Manage loan' next to the item title, and 'Return early')! This makes the copy available for another library member and reduces our hold waiting times. Your fellow library members will thank you!
